Tour description

First off, we must say that our Dubrovnik Homeland War Tour might not be everyone’s “cup of tea”. But it is a meaningful way of understanding some of Dubrovnik’s more recent history and the current way of life. The Balkans have always been perceived as the restless corner of Europe and some of the issues are too complex for visitors to understand. That is why we will be happy to shed some light on the underlying reasons behind the recent conflicts in this area.

FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE

Although more than 25 years have gone by, the Homeland War is still a very sensitive topic in Croatia, and especially in Dubrovnik, which has been greatly affected by it in terms of great human casualties and architectural damage. Using the spectacular setting of the Old City as our backdrop, we will help to clarify what exactly happened during those war years. We will tell you the historical background of the war, and, more importantly, give you a first-hand experience of what it was like to live in a besieged city.

MEMORIAL ROOM FOR ETERNAL PRAISE

To fully understand the impact this war of independence had on our beloved hometown, we will pay a visit to Sponza Palace. It houses the Memorial Room of the Defenders of Dubrovnik, all of whom have laid their lives so Dubrovnik could stay forever free and a true symbol of independence and freedom. We will also visit the house of the local painter Ivo Grbić, which also serves as his gallery and is dedicated to the Homeland War.

Along the way, we will talk about the consequences of the war on the locals, the economy, the monuments under UNESCO’s protection, and current relations with the neighboring countries that participated in the war, among other things. We are sure you will end the tour feeling more enlightened, and with a more comprehensive knowledge of Dubrovnik’s turbulent past, which, after all, is our goal.

PLEASE NOTE : The Croatian War of Independence Museum is located inside the Fort Imperial atop Srđ Hill above the Old City, which is the symbol of the city’s defense. If you wish, with an additional charge, we can make arrangements for visiting the museum.
