Tour description

There are so many fascinating tales we could tell you about our ancestors, the people who lived here at the time of the Republic of Dubrovnik. The way they ran and defended the city, practiced diplomacy, handled relations with their rivals and enemies, and succeeded to make four religions coexist in harmony, or why and how they accepted newcomers whose skills were used to better the quality of life in the Republic…

We are personally very proud of all these historical facts, and we happily share them with all our guests during our Dubrovnik politics & religion tour.

THE BIRTH OF THE DUBROVNIK REPUBLIC

The Republic of Dubrovnik nourished good relations with all religions, partly out of respect, and partly out of political wisdom. Inside the Old City, you will find a Catholic church, an Orthodox church and a mosque within a hundred-meter radius. And the synagogue is not very far either.

During Dubrovnik politics & religion tour we will visit the city’s Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the 12th century. Legend has it that King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart, gifted the funds for the construction of the cathedral the authorities after being saved from a shipwreck near Dubrovnik.

PAST AND PRESENT WAY OF LIFE

You probably didn’t know that (but we are here to share the knowledge with you), at one point, there was a Jewish ghetto in the Republic of Dubrovnik. Jews moved to Dubrovnik following their exodus from Spain and Portugal at the end of the 15th century. Initially, they lived in Ploče, outside the city walls, but then, sometime in the 16th century, the Dubrovnik Senate allowed them to settle within the City walls, in Žudioska Street. That is where the oldest Sephardic synagogue in the world, and the second oldest synagogue in Europe, is located, alongside a small museum. The synagogues is still in use today.

We will also visit the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Annunciation, built in 1877 in Od Puča Street. Adjacent to the church is a museum housing a collection of valuable icons.

Apart from taking you to see all these religious and historic sites, we will tell you how the newcomers were treated in the Republic of Dubrovnik, and how people of different religions live in Dubrovnik today, after the 1990s war.
